Extreme Precipitating Events in Satellite and Rain Gauge Products over the Sahel

چکیده

Abstract Over the recent decades, extreme precipitation events (EPEs) have become more frequent over Sahel. Their properties, however, so far received little attention. In this study spatial distribution, intensity, seasonality, and interannual variability of EPEs are examined, using both a reference dataset based on high-density rain gauge network Burkina Faso 24 gridded datasets. The datasets evaluated in depth while their commonalities used to document EPE properties defined as occurrence daily accumulated exceeding all-day 99th percentile 1° × pixel. Faso, ranges between 21 33 mm day −1 . show that occur phase with West African monsoon annual cycle, frequently during core season wet years. These results consistent among but also wider exhibit wide diversity skills when compared Burkinabe reference. This finally emphasizes lack data availability whole Sahel strongly impedes our ability gain insights properties.

The Frequency of Extreme Rain Events in Satellite Rain-Rate Estimates and an Atmospheric General Circulation Model

The frequency distributions of surface rain rate are evaluated in the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) satellite observations and the NOAA/GFDL global atmosphere model version 2 (AM2). Instantaneous satellite rain-rate observations averaged over the 2.5° latitude 2° longitude model grid are shown to be representative of the half-hour rain ra...

Investigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa

This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...

Evaluation of Satellite Precipitation Products with Rain Gauge Data at Different Scales: Implications for Hydrological Applications

Rain gauge and satellite-retrieved data have been widely used in basin-scale hydrological applications. While rain gauges provide accurate measurements that are generally unevenly distributed in space, satellites offer spatially regular observations and common error prone retrieval. Comparative evaluation of gauge-based and satellite-based data is necessary in hydrological studies, as precipita...

Increasing trend of extreme rain events over India in a warming environment.

Against a backdrop of rising global surface temperature, the stability of the Indian monsoon rainfall over the past century has been a puzzle. By using a daily rainfall data set, we show (i) significant rising trends in the frequency and the magnitude of extreme rain events and (ii) a significant decreasing trend in the frequency of moderate events over central India during the monsoon seasons ...
